Picture puzzles and mathematical puzzles were hugely popular in the early part of last century. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most popular author of the era was Sam Lloyd who wrote numerous books on puzzles of all kinds. His picture puzzle books were primarily in rebus form, a rebus being "an enigmatical representation of a name, word or phrase by figures, pictures, arrangements of letters, etc., which suggest the syllables of which it is made up."
